Brazilian Walnut (ipe tabebuia)

Brazilian Walnut is one of the worlds hardest timbers with a janka* hardness of 3680 in comparison to hard maple at 1450 orb walnut 1010. it has an a1 fire rating, the highest possible, and the same as steel or concrete. it has a 3 – 5 times longer life span then other timbers. traditionally used in heavy construction and marine work.

Prized for the lapacho oil which is extracted from the tree and which is believed to cure many ailments. called “tree of life” by native south americans.

This impressive timber considered even finer than cuban mahogany has an incredibly beautiful figuring displaying many colours over a base of deepest golden toffee brown overlaid with darkest chocolate brown with occasional sweeping black gum lines. A natural deep wax lustre intensifies the handsome beauty of this wood. Freshly cut and laid it exhibits a wide variation of colours from shimmering light golden brown, to dark glossy chestnut and darkest aubergine with hints of pistachio to olive green which then mature to a more subtle warm rich mix of all the brown tones which enhance the high arched sweeping figure with a sprinkling of tight black knots. Truly one of the most spectacular timbers in the world.
