Greenheart (ocotea rodeii)

Greenheart is an extremely hard, heavy and dense timber which grows mainly in guyana. It is denser than water, and therefore does not float.

Used extensively for marine constriction, many of the worlds largest dock structures were originally built from greenheart including queens island at belfast where the white star liners such as titanic and olympic were built.

Greenheart was also used to make early fly fishing rods because of its extreme bending strength, and these are rare and collectable items now. The hulls of the ships Discovery, Endurance and Fram which took Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen to the antartic were sheathed in greenheart, and the discovery can be seen docked in dundee, scotland.

Greenheart has a distinctive silky toffee coloured base with golden olive overtones and shading to darker brown with occasional black gum lines. the surface has a beautiful deep waxy lustre.

A handsome and unusual timber which is versatile for any interior. Probably best in contemporary of classical interiors. Also as a strong masculine wood for libraries or clubs.
