burgandy oak (quercus)

the finest mature first growth oaks from the chene du burgoine in the burgundy region of france. these oaks are famously used for the casks in which the legendary wines of the region are matured.

these oaks are renowned for their rich honey biscuit colour with much character and sweeping figure including pippy birr and cats paw cluster knotting which the plank company enhance by using our own mill blend of character, pippy, rift and quarter sawn boards. The latter are the rarest and most desirable cuts from the tree and produce the shimmering medullary rays so redolent of fine arts & crafts furniture.  these french grown oaks are identical in colour and character to native english or irish oaks

the strength of oak is proverbial. timbers cleaved from oak trees are hard, tough and strong in virtually all strength classes. the durability and longevity of oak is witnessed by the survival of many fine timber framed medieval buildings in england and france.  and sailing ships like the tudor mary rose which have been raised from the sea bed after many centuries with their oak timbers still intact.  the weight of seasoned oak is 46 –  48lbs, the similar to cuban mahogany.

the plank company burgundy oak floors are for the connoisseur of the traditional heavy, thick, wide solid close grained planked floors used through the centuries in period buildings which include all the surface “imperfections” and variations of colour acquired over many years of growth in vastly changing weather conditions and temperature changes of european seasons.
