purpleheart is a strong, hard wood with
a sensational african violet colour. when
freshly milled it is a vibrant pure purple,
and with oxidisation it gradually changes
to reddish brown purple, then to a rich,
deep violet brown which is why it is often
called violet wood.
amaranth figure is attractive and has a
curved sweeping arch. the finished sealed
wood has a silky surface lustre.
used for making fine furniture, and because
it turns well, billiard cues. diving boards and
skis can also be made of amaranth wood. a
deep purple dye may be extracted from the
wood and used for fabrics.
amaranth is an unusual and inspirational
timber which can be used anywhere the
imagination can place it. the striking colour
probably lends itself to contemporary or
minimal interiors, and for stunning commercial
designs. it is often used together with other
woods like padauk to create a sensational two
tone floor.
