purpleheart/amaranth (peltogyne)

purpleheart is a strong, hard wood with a sensational african violet colour. when freshly milled it is a vibrant pure purple, and with oxidisation it gradually changes to reddish brown purple, then to a rich, deep violet brown which is why it is often called violet wood.

amaranth figure is attractive and has a curved sweeping arch. the finished sealed wood has a silky surface lustre.

used for making fine furniture, and because it turns well, billiard cues. diving boards and skis can also be made of amaranth wood. a deep purple dye may be extracted from the wood and used for fabrics.

amaranth is an unusual and inspirational timber which can be used anywhere the imagination can place it. the striking colour probably lends itself to contemporary or minimal interiors, and for stunning commercial designs. it is often used together with other woods like padauk to create a sensational two tone floor.
