underfloor heating (ufh) overview
The Plank Company have pioneered the installation of solid hardwood wide planks over underfloor heating (ufh) systems. We researched, developed and tested in situ for 5 years, before fully guaranteeing our wood over ufh for the past 10 years. 15 years experience and knowledge.
We have 1000’s metres of solid hardwood wide planks successfully installed over ufh. We have gained an expertise and knowledge of underfloor heating and wood which is unrivalled anywhere. Provided our pre installation, installation and operation instructions are followed, (and these are not difficult) our solid hardwood planks will remain stable to within aesthetically acceptable levels with only the slightest contraction which is usually almost imperceptible.
Underfloor heating (ufh) is increasingly the choice of heating system chosen for new build, extension and refurbishment projects.
The temperature at which ufh operates is actually more moderate than with conventional radiators. It is generally agreed that wood is not such a good conductor of heat as tiles, but once the wood is heated through, it is an excellent radiator of heat, and will store and radiate the heat for longer than any other floor coverings. Almost like a giant floor storage heater.
Wood is “alive” it moves and breathes. When moisture levels are raised the timber will take in the moisture and expand very slightly, and when the air is too dry it will be released again. This is healthy for us, and having wood flooring helps us breathe more easily. Installing it over ufh allows us to stay warm and comfortable, and also to maintain a healthy environment within our homes. Unlike engineered/multilayer or laminate floors which can release harmful chemicals which are used in their manufacture, solid wood is the safest and healthiest material one can use in the home.
It is essential to consult The Plank Company at the earliest stage possible in the project, so we can consult with clients, architects and builders to advise the correct method of build up and preparation. please do not consider a solid wood floor like a carpet or tiles which can be laid/fitted at the end of the build, but as a full structural installation which needs careful planning and preparation.
The Plank Company will advise and assist at every stage of an ufh installation once an order has been placed to ensure that on site conditions are perfect to receive our solid wood planks and to ensure that our boards are ready for a successful installation.
We have our own excellent ufh system “WarmWood” specifically designed to be compatible with solid wood, which will be happy to demonstrate and advise. Please refer to the “WarmWood” link.
